Claudia Weidenthaler finishes habilitation at the Department of Chemistry at the University Duisburg-Essen
Dr. Claudia Weidenthaler has attained the habilitation at the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Duisburg-Essen. She got the entitlement to teach at the Department of Inorganic Chemistry. Although she will stay at the Institute, she is happy to be more closely related to the university and about the opportunity to give lectures there.
At the institute in Mülheim Claudia Weidenthaler is in charge of the group “Powder Diffraction and Surface Spectroscopy”. The group focuses on the crystallographic characterization of catalysts. This is also the topic of Weidenthaler’s habilitation thesis „Modern Powder Diffraction for Crystallographic Studies of Functional Materials“. The crystallographer reports on innovative methods and development of devices for the investigation of catalysts under reaction conditions. “For scientists it is particularly important that they don`t have to travel to international research facilities to conduct their experiments. There you have only very limited time for performing experiments. Here we have our own equipment, allowing that all preliminary experiments can be performed at our institute. These are ideal conditions for scientists”, explains Weidenthaler.
In the laboratories Weidenthaler and her colleagues develop specific sample environments which enable experiments under high gas pressures or corrosive gas atmospheres. The combination of different techniques allows to exactly meet the requirements for specific scientific problems. Sample environments are tailor-made and the instruments are adjusted to the individual scientific problems. “We implement devices that are not available commercially. This is a great advantage for scientists working here”, emphasizes Weidenthaler. “There exist also collaborations with scientists from other research facilities who take advantage of the tailor-made infrastructure within the joint projects.”
