Girls' Day at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung: 33 girls try out laboratory professions, analytics and precision mechanics

Christal analysis, calcium carbonate synthesis and insights into the nanoworld with the electron microscope - the offerings at Girls' Day 2018 at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung were broadly diversified and offered 33 girls many opportunities to get a taste of the work of a laboratory assistant in research for one day.

The staff of the institute had prepared a total of 16 stations where the girls could try out the activities of a chemistry or physics laboratory assistant in teams of two. Each participant went through two positions adapted to her age and some also got to know the work as an industrial mechanic, as the Werkstätten of the institute also traditionally take part in Girls' Day. At the lathe, milling machine and CNC machine, they produced a mobile phone holder made of Plexiglas, which they were allowed to take home with them in memory of Girls' Day in coal research.
