The Chemical Society of Japan (CSJ), as publisher of the scientific journal The Chemical Record (TCR), has been awarding a high-profile name lecture since 2002: the TCR Lecture. Embedded in the Spring Meeting of the Japanese Chemists, CSJ thus created an outstanding lecture series featuring top experts from around the world. Each year, the TCR Lecture highlights different areas of chemical expertise and serves to promote interdisciplinary international exchange. This year, Professor Ben List of the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung was honored as TCR Lecturer and invited to the 100th CSJ Spring Meeting. The lecture on designing universal and highly reactive acid catalysts took place on March 19 and was transmitted online to the audience at Tokyo University of Science and numerous meeting participants on the web.

The catalysis researcher maintains good connections with Japan

Ben List leads a joint research group with the Institute for Chemical Reaction Design and Discovery (ICReDD) at Hokkaido University. In 2005, he has been a Visiting Professor at Gakushuin University in Tokyo and received his first Lectureship Award from the Chemical Society of Japan. In 2013, he was honored with the prestigious Mukaiyama Award for his outstanding contributions to synthetic organic chemistry. Ben List hopes that he will soon meet his Japanese colleagues in person again: "It was a great honor to deliver the TCR Lecture and it would have been a pleasure to do so in person in Tokyo," he said.
