BrightSync provides Max Planck expertise as a flexible and powerful resource for companies

New start-up initiative BrightSync gets funding by the MAX!mize program

June 11, 2025

BrightSync was started by Dr. Tim Schulte, postdoctoral researcher, and Prof. Tobias Ritter, director at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung and has been selected for the first phase of the MAX!mize program. The start-up initiative receives pre-seed funding of 50.000€ over a period of six months. BrightSync aims to connect researchers of Max-Planck and other leading research institutions with industrial partners, to work on real-world industrial projects; supporting young researchers in their transition from academia to industry.

BrightSync connects companies with the deep scientific expertise of the Max Planck Society, turning top-tier research knowledge into a flexible and powerful resource. BrightSync helps companies turn their challenges into concrete projects, whether they are looking for strategic input, fresh ideas in R&D, or new talent. BrightSync assembles interdisciplinary teams of scientists, structures tailored formats, and manages projects from start to finish: “Our model will make it easy for industry to access that expertise—fast, focused, and with real outcomes”, says Tim Schulte. Participating PhD Students and Postdocs gain valuable work experience and expand their professional horizons, bridging the gap between academia and industry in a way that benefits everyone involved. Additionally, companies can hire talents after successful projects, which gives the participating researchers a chance to land their dream job. To further support career development, BrightSync plans to provide coaching in soft skills such as communication, leadership, and career planning. The use of the platform is free for researchers, who can already sign up for the pilot stage by just sending an email to hello@brightsync.de.

MAX!mize is part of Max Planck Innovation’s start-up initiative, designed to help scientists turn breakthrough ideas into successful ventures. It includes three phases: a boot camp, an exploration phase, and a final venture-building phase. BrightSync entered the exploration phase after Dr. Schulte successfully pitched his idea to a jury of industrial representatives in Munich.
Over the coming months, the founders plan to expand their network of scientists and establish the first pilot project with an industry partner.
