TiCl4 (Ti4+) is reduced under H2 atmosphere with a tungsten wire. The TiCl4 (liquid) is heated up to evaporate it. At the same time a potential is applied to heat the wire. As soon as the TiCl4 in the gas phase gets in contact with the wire it is reduced to generate TiCl3 (purple powder).
