Postdoctoral positions at the MPI Kofo

Pursue cutting-edge research and forge valuable connections to advance your scientific career

Are you interested in embarking on the next stage of your scientific career at a renowned hub for catalysis research, enjoy a collaborative working environment, and state-of-the art facilities? Apply for a position as a postdoctoral associate in one the MPI Kofo’s research groups!

The Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung shares its Mülheim campus with the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion, and focuses on chemical catalysis in all its aspects. The institute is home to leaders in the field or organic, inorganic, physical and theoretical chemistry, and has been a hub of innovation for over 100 years. All scientific discourse at the Max-Planck Insitute für Kohlenforschung is conducted in English, and all administrative communication is provided in German as well as English, so knowledge of the German language is not required, but good spoken and written English is necessary. Mülheim an der Ruhr is a small town located in the west of Germany (~170,000 inhabitants), which is only a short train journey away from a number of larger cities (Essen, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Dortmund). In addition to many green spaces, Mülheim offers affordable housing and a comparatively low cost of living.

In addition to scientific excellence, the institute offers its postdocs positions as staff members with salaries set by a collective bargaining agreement (100% of a TVöD E13 position), health insurance, vacation time and a generous family leave policy. Scientific communication at the institute is carried out in English, so knowledge of the German language is not necessary. Currently, 90% of the postdocs at the institute originate from countries other than Germany, making it a highly international environment. As a signatory to the Charta der Vielfalt, the MPI Kofo aims to both celebrate its diversity, support the diverse needs of its community, and expand access for currently underrepresented populations.

Applications for postdoc positions should be made directly to the head of the research group you wish to join.

Postdoctoral associates who arrive with children or chose to start a family during their time at the institute can find more information on child care opportunities and family leave here.
