Mechanochemical synthesis of organic compounds

The Felderhoff Group explores mechanochemical methods for the synthesis of organic compounds, including bioactive compounds, co-crystals, and diverse chemical scaffolds. As a partner in the European IMPACTIVE initiative, the group is actively involved in the development of scalable mechanochemical strategies for pharmaceutical manufacturing. A recent highlight is the successful synthesis of high-purity pharmaceutical co-crystals on a kilogram scale. These were obtained by short reaction times, while solvent consumption was significantly reduced or eliminated. The transformations were performed using industrially relevant equipment such as drum and attritor mills. The group also investigates a wide range of mechanochemical reactions to find more efficient and sustainable alternatives to conventional solution-based processes. This research encompasses transformations on the milligram-to-kilogram scale and utilizes various milling equipment and technologies to evaluate their applicability in green and scalable synthesis.
