Research Award for the dissertation of Carolina Galeano

Research Award for the dissertation of Carolina Galeano

This year the Research Award Hydrogen NRW was awarded for the first time. Right away a former scientist of the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung was among the winners: Dr. Diana Carolina Galeano Nuñez was honored for her dissertation "Nanostructured Carbon Materials for Applications in Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells", which she wrote at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung in Mülheim. The prize money is 3000 Euro.

Carolina Galeano was at the MPI für Kohlenforschung for four years. In her dissertation she wanted to write about energy issues, so the department of Professor Ferdi Schüth was the perfect place for her. Looking back Galeano explains that the time at the MPI für Kohlenforschung was one of the best times of her life. “I liked it so much that I decided to stay in Germany and not to go back to Columbia. I learned a lot in the department of Professor Schüth – from him as a scientist and as a person.”

Today Galeano works at BASF and is still dealing with energy issues. In the future she hopes to do research on fuel cells again. “Fuel cells are very important for the mobility of the future. This is why I have this issue at heart.”

The Research Award Hydrogen NRW was awarded to four young scientists and has a total budget of 9000 Euro. The prizes were awarded on the 15th annual meeting of the Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Network NRW. It is part of the Energy Agency.NRW. With over 400 members it is the biggest network for fuel cell and hydrogen technology in Europe. It initiated 113 projects, which were funded by NRW and the European Union with 128 Million Euro.
