Mülheim is proud of its pioneer in the field of Organocatalysis: Prof. Ben List receives the Ruhrpreis 2013

The city of Mülheim has honored outstanding artists and scientists who are connected to the city through their lives or through their work with the Ruhrpreis since 1962. Now the culture committee has decided that Prof. Benjamin List and the artist Eberhard Ross will be this year’s awardees.  Ulrich Ernst, Deputy Mayor in charge of Culture, congratulated the winners at the official announcement.

Connection between science and art

"I am really delighted that we both get the prize at the same time", explains Ben List, who admires the art of Eberhard Ross. "We both deal with organic things," says List, thus hinting at the Organic Geometry in Eberhard Ross’s paintings and of course, the Organocatalysis his department.

Eberhard Ross also emphasizes the connection between science and art. Max Planck Institutes are like an artist’s workshop for him. And his studio is a laboratory in his eyes.

Inspiring work for other researchers

From the city’s point of view Ben List is a worthy winner because he has inspired thousands of researchers around the world through his pioneering work. According to the jury List helps to spread the outstanding scientific reputation of the institute in Mülheim.

The Ruhrpreis is sponsored by the Sparkasse. It is endowed with 3000 Euro. Other scientists of the Kohlenforschung have already been awarded, including Ferdi Schüth, Alois Fürstner and Manfred Reetz.

The Award Ceremony will take place at the Sparkasse Mülheim on Sunday, December 15th, 11:00.
