An award for an outstanding scientist: Stefan Grimme is the 2015 Karl Ziegler Guest Professor

This year Professor Dr. Stefan Grimme is honoured with the Karl Ziegler Guest Professorship of the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung. The laureate from the University of Bonn visited the institute in Mülheim an der Ruhr from May 19-21 and gave three lectures, including the award lecture „Accurate Quantum Chemistry for Complex Chemical Systems“.

Stefan Grimme is one of the worldwide leading scientists in Theoretical Chemistry and Modeling. He develops new computational methods in the field of density functional theory and quantum chemistry, combined with applications to non-covalent interactions, reaction mechanisms, and electronically excited states. His research contributes to a better understanding of complex chemical problems, through the interplay of experiment and theory. This is achieved by ever more accurate computer simulations of the processes that take place in complex molecules and materials.

The Karl Ziegler Guest Professorship was awarded for the 27th time this year in remembrance of Karl Ziegler, the famous chemist and Nobel Prize laureate. Karl Ziegler’s wife and his daughter initiated the Karl Ziegler Guest Professorship in 1978 in order to commemorate Karl Ziegler and to honour outstanding scientists.
