A special honor: Benjamin List becomes Carl Shipp Marvel Lecturer

The list of past award winners is impressive. The University of Illinois honors leaders of their fields with the Carl Shipp Marvel Lectures in Organic Chemistry. This year Professor Benjamin List was invited to Illinois and will give two lectures on his current research.

The first lecture “Asymmetric Aminocatalysis” will take place on December 7. The second lecture about “Asymmetric Counteranion Directed Catalysis” will proceed on December 8. Besides the lectures the University organizes a reception and several meetings with faculty and students from the Department of Chemistry in Illinois.

Benjamin List is well known for his work in the field of Organocatalysis. As a Director at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung he leads the department Homogenous Catalysis whose scientists search for new reactions and develop new concepts for catalysis.

The lecture series, to which Professor List was invited, honors the famous chemist Carl Shipp Marvel. He pioneered many areas of nowadays established chemistry and taught several leading scientists. Of particular note is his work in the field of organic polymers.
