Ph.D. student (m/f/d) in the field of Carbon Chemistry

The Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung in Mülheim an der Ruhr conducts basic chemical research aimed at making chemical transformations as energy and resource efficient as possible. Catalysis with all its facets is at the centre of the research.

For our research group “Functional Materials” (Dr. Wolfgang Schmidt) we are searching for a

Ph. D. student (m/f/d) in the field of “Carbon Chemistry”
in full time, 39 hours
limited in time to 3 years available from 01/03/2020.

Responsibilities
•    Work in a research project on carbon xerogels for electrochemical applications
•    Preparation of tailor-made carbon xerogels with respect to requirement of
     application
•    Development of novel preparation routes for carbon xerogels
•    Characterization of the xerogels with standard physicochemical methods
•    Collaboration with project partners and preparation of status reports

Requirements
•    Ph.D. / Master Degree in Chemistry
•    Advanced knowledge on characterization methods including N2 sorption, XRD,
     SAXS, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, TEM, TG-DTA would be desirable
•    Basic knowledge on preparation of polymer and carbon materials would be
     desirable
•    Experimental skills are required
•    Careful and accurate operation
•    Good English skills
•    Ability to work in a team, good communication skills
