Research in Germany  features Dr. Hrishikesh Joshi

The scientist is active in the field of bioeconomy and develops catalysts for the sustainable use of renewable resources.

It was and is the scientific topic of the year 2020/2021 in Germany: bioeconomy. The economy has to change towards a sustainable use of renewable resources to respond to dwindling resources and increasing consumption by a growing world population. Politics and society have become aware of this and move away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy resources. Bioeconomy, however, permeates even more sectors: for example, the production waste from the agricultural industry can be converted and used to produce new synthetic materials. Products made from these bio-based raw materials often show improved material properties and can be manufactured with low ecological footprint. Thus, research into such chemical processes is of high importance, and part of the work in the Department of Heterogeneous Catalysis at the MPI für Kohlenforschung is targeted in this direction.

The website "Research in Germany" of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) now presents a series on aspects of bioeconomy that are currently being investigated in Germany. Included is a portrait of Hrishikesh Joshi, who until recently worked as a PhD student in the department of Professor Ferdi Schüth. Joshi worked on the development catalysts and processes for converting cellulose and wood waste into the bioplastic PEF, which can be used, for example, in the production of packaging materials. In the article linked here, you can find out what motivated the Indian researcher to pursue his PhD at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung in Mülheim and how he feels about the research environment in Germany.
