New apprentices for international top-level research

Nine new apprentices start at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung

September 05, 2025

September 1 marks an important step in the lives of many young people: the beginning of their vocational training. Nine of them are taking this step at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung in Mülheim. From now on, they will support cutting-edge research at the institute in laboratories and workshops, training as chemical laboratory technicians, physics laboratory assistants, or precision mechanics.

During their training, the apprentices not only gain insights into different departments but also benefit from in-house courses taught by experienced staff, in addition to their vocational school lessons. The concept has proven successful: apprentices at the institute regularly rank among the best in the district of the Essen, Mülheim, and Oberhausen Chamber of Industry and Commerce. Some graduates remain at the institute, while others quickly find attractive positions in industry. The training program has also received multiple awards within the Max Planck Society.

“I started my own training here 20 years ago. That’s why it is always a special moment for me to welcome new apprentices each year and to accompany them on their journey,” says training coordinator Laila Sahraoui.

For the coming year, the institute will again offer training positions for chemical laboratory technicians, physics laboratory assistants, precision mechanics, and management assistants in office communication. Recruitment tests will begin in October, and applications are now open.
