On the 19th of November in 2019, the Web of Science Group – the worldwide largest and most prestigious independent editor index - published their annually released list of the “Highly Cited Researchers” (HCRs) of the year 2019. HCRs are scientists that demonstrated an outstanding performance over the past decade. In a previous study, 6200 authors from all over the world were selected as HCRs based on their publication records. The list is grouped into 21 research fields. Among this year’s HCRs is also Professor Frank Neese who leads the Department of Molecular Theory and Spectroscopy at the MPI für Kohlenforschung. Prof. Neese has been on this list since it was first installed in 2015. For 2019, he is listed in the category Chemistry together with 236 other researchers. The MPI für Kohlenforschung is particularly pleased by the fact that the newly elected Max Planck Fellow, Prof. Stefan Grimme (University of Bonn), is also among the HCRs. The Max Planck Fellow Program intends to intensify the interaction between Max Planck Institutes and Universities by providing outstanding university-based researchers additional ressources that are localized at the Max Planck institutes. Overall, 86 Max Planck based researchers received the honor of being HCRs in 2019. Among them is also Prof. Dr. Robert Schlögl, Director of the neighboring MPI for Chemical Energy Conversion. Altogether, 347 authors that are based in Germany, among them 16 chemists, are found on the 2019 HCR list.
