Frank Neese is new director at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung

Frank Neese is new director at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung

Starting from January 1st  2018, Professor Frank Neese is the new director at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung and leads the Department for Molecular Theory and Spectroscopy as the successor of Professor Walter Thiel, who now has an emeritus status since March 2017. Prof. Thiel founded the Department of Theory at the MPI für Kohlenforschung in 1999 and lead it ever since. Prof. Neese moves to the MPI from the neighboring Institute, the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion, where he also was director and leading an interdisciplinary group that combines spectroscopy and theory in development and application. His team, consisting of approximately 50 employees, joins him and has started working at the Kohlenforschung.

„The appointment of Frank Neese is favorable for both Mulheim Max-Planck Institutes", states Professor Tobias Ritter, who has taken up the position of Managing Director of the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung on January 1st. "For the Kohlenforschung it means an extension of our research program as the team does not only focus on computational chemistry, but also develops new quantum chemical methods and dedicates itself to spectroscopy. For the MPI CEC the change gives way to new appointments“, he adds.

About Prof. Frank Neese

The work of Prof. Frank Neese is focused on quantum chemistry and spectroscopy. His team develops new methods in computational chemistry and works on advanced spectroscopic experiments that aim at obtaining geometric and electronic structure information. The group will move to the MPI für Kohlenforschung within the second half of the year as reconstruction measures are completed. Frank Neese is looking forward to his new working environment: "The infrastructure of the MPI für Kohlenforschung is excellent and I am glad that I will be able to continue the research activities with my team without mayor changes".

More information on Frank Neese can be found in our press release (German only) and on his website.
