Dr. Harun Tüysüz finishes habilitation at the Department of Inorganic Chemistry at the Ruhr University Bochum

Dr. Harun Tüysüz has attained the Habilitation at the Faculty of Chemistry at the Ruhr University Bochum and is now entitled to teach at the Department of Inorganic Chemistry. Although he will stay at the Institute, he is happy to be more closely related to the university and about the opportunity to give lectures there. In his Habilitation de 38-year old scientist focused on the design and development of nanostructured materials for water splitting. The materials shall be used to produce oxygen and hydrogen by sustainable methods.

Since 2012 Tüysüz is in charge of the group “Heterogeneous Catalysis and Sustainable Energy” at the Institute. The main focus of the research group is the design and development of multi-functional nanostructured materials for catalytic applications, particularly for solar energy conversion. With a research group from the Ruhr University Bochum and the Technical University of Bratislava, Tüysüz recently discovered an effective pentlandite catalyst for hydrogen evolution under acidic conditions. He also takes part in the climate protection program “Carbon2Chem” which is promoted by the Ministry of Science and Education. „Carbon2Chem” aims at using emissions from steel production as raw material for chemicals. In the process, the surplus energy needed shall come from renewable sources. Tüysüz is the only scientist of the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung who participates in this project. As an expert of sustainable energy he is doing research in the group called “Carbon2Polymers” that focuses on the recycling of raw material for the production of polymers.
