Bill Morandi and his team have found an easy way to remove a group from one molecule and attach it to another under palladium catalysis. They report a new type of metathesis reaction that can exchange aryl rings between pairs of organosulfur or organophosphorus compounds. The sulfur protocol was used to break down a commercial plastic into a simple monomer and to generate a library of drug derivatives. The phosphorus protocol enabled the preparation of new phosphorus heterocycles that could find applications in catalysis or organic materials. “The discovery of these reactions open new synthetic avenues and should inspire the development of other single bond metathesis reactions for applications across the molecular sciences”, Morandi explains.

The description of the method „Palladium catalyzed carbon-sulfur or carbon-phosphorus bond metathesis by reversible arylation“ was published in the current issue of science.
